HOLMWOOD CHASE AFTER DOUBLE

Raymond Graham, Contributor
(From The Gleaner Sport page)

Netball: Holmwood Technical will seek the rural double as their junior and senior teams take the court this morning in the Colgate-ISSA rural netball finals. Set to start at 10:00 a.m. at the Couples Hotel netball court in St. Ann, Holmwood will first meet Herbert Morrison in the junior final then in the feature, the Holmwood team will take on defending champions Edwin Allen in the seniors. In the first final, a new champion will be crowned as defending champions Edwin Allen were knocked out at the quarter-final stage. In Tuesday's semi-finals, Holmwood stopped St. Elizabeth Technical while Herbert Morrison got past Manchester High. Both teams should stage a battle royal. In the feature game, Carlene Graham-coached Holmwood Technical will seek their first title. Buoyed by the school's excellent performance in cricket and track and field earlier this year, the Christiana school will be out to add another trophy for the school cupboard. In her third season at Holmwood, Graham has done wonders with the team. "The team has worked hard all season and I am very confident that the team will be victorious today," said Graham. Graham also gave All-Island champion coach Lloyd Walker of Dunoon a lot of credit. "The team camped for three weeks in the summer with the Dunoon team and they learnt a lot from them," she said. Although Edwin Allen were not as impressive as their opponents in the regular season, the defending champions stopped the very strong Manchester High team 30-23 in their semi-final at Nain on Tuesday. "It will be a very stiff match against Holmwood as they have the height advantage over our girls," said Minnette Reynolds, coach of Edwin Allen. "If our girls stick to the game plan and score some early goals I am confident we can get many from them," she said.

The likely starting teams will be:
Edwin Allen:

GS: Francene Pomell, GA: Diana Dunkley, WA: Collette Brown, C: Hughonette Henry
WD: Michelle Ann Ottey, GD: Frances Pomell, GK: Latoya Brown.

Holmwood:

GS: Natasha Copeland, GA: Nardia Hanson, C: Annmarie Meeks, WA: Juliet Morris
WD: Nicole Clarke, GD: Heidian Williams, GK: Elarine Butler.

HOLMWOOD, STETHS IN BIG CLASH

Versel Thompson, Freelance Writer

Defending Champions Holmwood Technical will be hunting back-to-back titles when they oppose long-time rivals St. Elizabeth Technical in the final of the Headley Cup cricket competition starting today at Alpart Sports Club. The contest is scheduled for three days and each team will play one inning. Play is set to start at 10:30 a.m. each day. After reaching six finals in nine years under coach Robert Lewis, Holmwood triumphed last year for the third time when they toppled many-time champions STETHS to take the crown as kings of rural schoolboy cricket. Then, Holmwood were paced by Ricardo Powell and Matthew Sinclair who have since represented Jamaica and the West Indies A. This year, however, none of them are around and Lewis says they must remain focussed to retain their crown. Holmwood's batting is expected to be led by openers Dwayne Ewart and Lanslot Warren, Kevin Wynter, Junior Lawrence, Gary Graham, Odean Brown and the enterprising Evon McInnis. Captain and Jamaica Under-19 leg-spinner Kevin Peart, who warmed up with eight wickets for 95 runs for Manchester against St. Mary in the Rothmans Middlesex Senior Cup competition over the weekend, will lead Holmwood's bowling attack. He will be supported by left-arm spinner Andre Dwyer and pacer McInnis - the man who captured six wickets against Kingston College when Holmwood won the Spalding Cup last year and who finished with four for 35 against York Castle in the semi-finals. STETHS, prepared by Jamaica Under-19 coach Junior Bennett, have been enjoying a good season and are expected to fight all the way in their bid to regain the title.

STETHS BOUNCE BACK IN HEADLEY CUP FINAL

Versel Thompson, Freelance Writer

ALPART - FORMER CHAMPIONS St. Elizabeth Technical recovery from a precarious position to dominate the opening day of the three-day Headley Cup final against Holmwood at Alpart yesterday. At the close of the day's play, STETHS who at one stage were reeling at 70 for six, recovered to make 176 and place themselves in a strong position to regain the trophy with defending champions Holmwood Technical struggling at 22 for three. STETHS owed their good position to #8 batsman Kamal Dennis and #3 Brenton Parchment, who posted 96 runs for the seventh wicket. Dennis was the dominant partner, hitting three sixes and six fours from 96 balls for a top score of 65 while Parchment, playing the anchor was the penultimate wicket when he was brilliantly ran out by Kevin Wynter for 48 after he had faced 177 deliveries and hit one solitary boundary. Earlier, captain and opening batsman Mel Wint was the first to go when he was left stranded in mid-pitch after stroking a ball off Holmwood captain and legspinner Kevin Peart toEvon McInnis at mid-off. McInnis had no problem in running him out for 13 with the total on 43 and a run later fellow opener Odayne Ewart was caught behind by his brother Dwayne Ewart off Peart for 17. Dennis joined the action with STETHS struggling at 70 for six before he and Parchment took the Santa Cruz based team to a respectable total. Andre Dwyer was the pick of the Holmwood bowlers taking 3-30 from 24.3 overs, Peart took 3-73 from 38 overs, while pacer McInnis finished with 2-34 from 16 overs. Wynter and Junior Lawrence were the Holmwood batsmen still at the crease on two and six respectively with McInnis, Odane Brown, Peart, Dwyer, Damion Morgan and Kelvin Jones the batsmen to come. After his batting heroics, Dennis came back and claimed 2-9 with the ball while the other wicket was taken by Lamore Wright to have Holmwood on the backfoot.

STETHS thrash Holmwood for No.16

Versel Thompson, Freelance Writer

ST. ELIZABETH TECHNICAL crowned themselves kings of rural schoolboy cricket for the 16th time, after defeating Holmwood Technical by an emphatic 86 runs an hour and five minutes before lunch on the second day of the Headley Cup final at Alpart Sports Club yesterday. Scores: STETHS 176 from 92.3 overs (Kamal Dennis 65, Brenton Parchment 48; Andre Dwyer 3-30, Kevin Peart 3-73, Evon McInnis 2-34); Holmwood 90 from 27.3 overs. Junior Bennett, STETHS' coach, had high praises for his team but singled out pacers Kamal Dennis and Brenton Parchment as key elements to their win. Bennett said: "We played as true champions. We were in dire straights at 70 for six on Tuesday's first day but (Kamal) Dennis batted responsibly along with (Brenton) Parchment and once we had made 176 we knew it was a winning total. We have been bowling consistently the whole season and no team since 1979 has scored more than 150 runs against us in a final." Robert Lewis, Holmwood's coach, blamed their loss on poor fielding. He said: "We have a good unit but poor fielding let us down and when it was time for us to bat we lost three quick wickets and lost the initiative when we went to bat today (yesterday)," Lewis said. Resuming at the precarious overnight total of 22 for three, Holmwood were pushed on the back-foot as Kamal Dennis captured five wickets for 35 runs from 14 overs, while Lamorne Wright took four for 40 from 13 overs. STETHS used three bowlers - one of them Nikita Miller who bowled only three balls - to rip out their opponents whose last seven wickets fell for 68 runs. Kevin Wynter added two runs to his overnight score before he was first man out yesterday, bowled by pacer Wright for four and Junior Lawrence who was unbeaten on six overnight, went leg before to Wright for 10. Odean Brown was leg before to Dennis for seven, Kevin Peart and Andre Dwyer were bowled by Dennis for two and zero respectively, while Kelvin Jones was leg before to Wright without scoring. Evon McInnis, the only player to put up some resistance with 42, which included one six and five boundaries, was last man out when he went by the run out route. Victory qualified STETHS for the Spalding Cup - symbol of all-island schoolboy supremacy - play-off against the winners of the Corporate Area Sunlight Cup competition which is in its semi-final stage.
Note: We'll be back...

HOLMWOOD DEFENDS CHAMPIONSHIP AT PENN RELAY

Holmwood defending thier 4x800 championship at the 105th running of Penn Relay Carnival in Philadelphia on Thursday, qualified for the finals with a time of 9:17:55, good for third overall. If she is not, either Stephanie Johnson or Shauna Powell will join Karen Gayle, Nicola Smith and Kerri-Ann White in an attempt to regain the title they won last year. With or without Denton, Holmwoood will have their work cut out for them in the form of Manchester Central of New Hampshire, the National Scholastic Indoor champions who are going into the final with the best time of 9:15:82.

RICARDO POWELL FOR WORLD CUP

(ANOTHER HOLMWOODITE!!!!!!)

JAMAICA'S 20-YEAR-OLD MIDDLE-ORDER batsman Ricardo Powell has been drafted into the West Indies team for the World Cup cricket tournament which opens in England on May 14. On Saturday, minutes after the sixth one-day international against Australia at Kensington Oval, veteran Carl Hooper pulled out of the team, and yesterday the West Indies selectors named Powell as his replacement in the 15-man squad. "This is a great moment for me," said the former New Forest Primary and Junior High School and Holmwood Technical representative yesterday shortly after hearing the news of his selection. "I am happy to be part of the West Indies team, it is a honour to represent the West Indies, and I hope to do my best for my country (Jamaica) and for the West Indies." According to Powell, who attends Mico College on a scholarship provided by Alcan Jamaica Limited, he was expecting a call, and he was waiting on a call. "Based on my performance in the Busta Cup, I was always expecting a call. I did not know when, but I kept myself ready for it. I am just eager to go out there and do my best. I know it is going to be a big challenge, I have never played in England, I dont know the conditions, but it is an opportunity, and I am going to do my best." After representing Jamaica against Barbados last year in the Red Stripe Cup and then dropped after failing to distinguish himself, Powell was drafted into the national team after three matches in the Busta Cup this year, and after a moderate performance during which he scored 23 runs against the Windward Islands at Alpart, he impressed with two magnificent innings against Barbados at Kensington Oval. In the first match, the last of the preliminary round, the attacking Powell, joining the action with Jamaica on three for three, blasted two sixes and 11 fours while scoring 80 off 119 deliveries before he was fourth out at 127 for four; and in the second match, the semi-finals, he went to bat with Jamaica on 25 for three and smashed three sixes and 17 fours while scoring 114 not out off 118 deliveries in his team's total of 206. A brilliant fielder, Powell, the 1998 Jamaica Youth captain whose fairy-tale season included selection to the West Indies Board X1 and the West Indies A teams against Australia, is also a useful offspinner. His figures in the Busta Cup were: versus the Windward Islands 5-1-12-0, versus Barbados 34-11-75-3, versus Barbados 11-3-28-0 and 5-1-16-0. Powell, like Olympic gold medallist Deon Hemmings and wicketkeeper Matthew Sinclair, is a product of Alcan's outreach programme, and among those who yesterday expressed delight following his selection was Pat Anderson - Community Relations Officer Sports and Youth Development at Alcan, and a member of the Jamaica Cricket Board of Control. "I am bubbling," said the former Boys' Town and Manchester cricketer. "I am happy, so happy you cannot believe it. I hope he can go in and do like Collie Smith." Also bursting with happiness yesterday was Shirley Samuda - the principal at New Forest Primary and Junior High School and a former St. Elizabeth cricketer. "I think we are looking at a great West Indies cricketer in time to come," said Samuda. "His selection is a good move by the selectors. It is a wise move. He is a young man with the potential to go far." Powell is one of four Jamaicans on the West Indies team. The others are Courtney Walsh, James Adams and Nehemiah Perry.

Nuff respect to Ricardo - yu mek de techincal proud.

Tony Becca, Senior Sport Editor

A FEW months ago, Ricardo Powell was just another young cricketer with nothing but a dream. A few days from now, the 20-year-old batsman will be in England as a member of the West Indies team challenging for the World Cup. If it sounds like a fairytale, that's what it is. In 1998, Powell represented a short-staffed Jamaica team in the regional four-day tournament, and after failing to distinguish himself, after looking out of his depth, he was dropped after one match. This season, he failed to get into the team for the first three matches and was only selected, it appeared, when the younger Christopher Gayle took ill and had to be replaced. That, apparently, was all he wanted. It was an opportunity and he grabbed it with both hands. After a brilliant performance in the field against the Windward Islands at Alpart, Powell went to bat with Jamaica on 34 for four, he drove fast bowler Cameron Cuffy through extra-cover to get off the mar, and although he scored only 23 runs, he batted well and confidently on a dicey pitch, he demonstrated a maturity in an innings which lasted for 99 minutes and he reeled off two other impressive boundary strokes - an ondrive off pacer McNeil Morgan and a drive through extra-cover off pacer Casper Davis. That was just a sample of a precocious talent. In the following match against Barbados at Kensington Oval, he arrived on the scene with Jamaica struggling at three for three and slammed 80 (two sixes and 11 fours) off 119 deliveries and in his next outing, also against Barbados at Kensington, he went to bat with Jamaica on 25 for three and blasted 114 not out (three sixes and 17 fours) off 118 deliveries. After his second assault on the best of Barbados, cricket fans around the region welcomed Powell as a refreshing talent and the West Indies selectors responded by naming him to the West Indies Board XI and the West Indies A teams against Australia. Powell failed to perform, but to many, including a number of those who should know, that did not matter. To former greats like Sir Garfield Sobers and Sir Everton Weekes who saw him in all his glory at Kensington Oval, the young Jamaican had done enough in the Busta Cup to suggest t he is someone special and in selecting him although he has never played in even one one-day international, the selectors, probably led by Joel Garner, obviously agree he is someone special. In calling up young Powell, the selectors must have considered a few of those they have been grooming on the A team, and if they were putting together a Test team, they probably would have looked elsewhere - probably in the direction of Wavell Hinds, Ramnaresh Sarwan or Gayle. The World Cup, however, is different, the player Powell has replaced is Carl Hooper and apart from being an explosive batsman, he is also a useful offspin bowler and a brilliant fielder. There is nothing more refreshing than young talent on parade - especially the kind of talent which promises exciting play and now that his dream has come true, now that his fairytale season has ended happily, the hope is that Ricardo Powell, the young gun who has been itching to get into action, will explode on the cricket fields of England.

Holmwood's Palmer stops clock at 11.3

HOLMWOOD Technical High sprinter Nadine Palmer hit top form ahead of next month's Girls and Boys Championships to register two outstanding times on the fast Mondo track at G.C. Foster College last Saturday. Racing in the open class at the Lucozade Sport/John Wolmer Invitational, Palmer, helped by a fairly strong following wind, breezed 11.3 seconds for 100 metres and 23.2 seconds over 200 metres. Edwin Allen Comprehensive's Lisa Sharpe also looked very good in clocking 11.4 for the 100 metres while Vere Technical's Veronica Campbell was just behind Palmer in the 200 metres with 23.4. In the boys open 100 metres Vere Technical's Steve Mullings clocked 10.5 to beat the 10.6 returned by both Charlton Douglas of St. George's College and Camperdown's Chris McKenzie. Brandon Simpson of Ardenne won the open boys 200 metres in 21.5 from Andre Edwards (Wolmer's) 21.9 and Andre Samuels (St. Andrew Technica) 22.2. Calabar's Ricardo Melbourne had a fine hurdles double at the well-supported meet. He first won the open 110m hurdles in 13.9 beating Kingston College's Dwayne Robinson, 14.1 and Maurice Smith's 14.5 before returning to take the 400 metres hurdles open in 54.7. Wolmerian Gregory Little with 55.1 and Excelsior's Courtney McDermoth 55.3 were second and third respectively in the 400m hurdles. Toni Ann Doyley of St. Andrew High also returned a fast 13.8 for the Class 1 girls 100m hurdles placing well ahead of Kereecia Thompson of Immaculate High who clocked 15.5. Doyley, however, failed in her attempt for the double. She was beaten out of sight in the 400 metres hurdles open by St. Jago's Andrea Bliss. Bliss, drawn in lane 3, covered the field in less than 100 metres to cross the finish line in 59.5. Doyley was second in 62.3 and Bliss' teammate Taneisha Guthrie third in 62.5. Vere Technical's Sheree Francis was also a double winner at the meet. Francis, the junior national record holder for the high jump, cleared 1.78m. In the long jump Francis leapt 5.69m to beat St. Jago's Keisha Parker by just three centimetres (5.66m). Kadia Kentish (Kingston Technical) with 5.50m was third. Long-time rivals, Kingston College's Orville Byfield and Maurice Smith of Calabar, swopped wins in the open discus and shot put. Byfield threw the shot put 15.53m to Smith's 15.43. Damion Smith (Munro) was third with 14.99m. Smith turned the tables to take the discus with a throw of 52.89m to Byfield's 48.18m. Damion Smith was again third with 43.80m. In the open 800 metres Holmwood's Karen Gayle did two minutes 14.8 seconds to just hold off Janice Barrett (Queen's) 2.14.9 and Nicola Maye (Edwin Allen) 2.15.4. Vere Technical's Ricardo Cunningham, one of the favourites for the event at next month's championships, clocked 1.57.6 for the boys open 800 metres just beating Jason Williams (KTHS) 1.57.8 and Omar Briscoe (Ardenne) 1.58.0. Other winners at the meet were: Triple jump open (girls) - Authea Chambers (ICHS) 12.26m; 400m open (boys) - David Coombs (JC) 48.4; 400m open (girls) - Hazel Regis (St. Andrew High) 54.7; 80m hurdles Class 3 (girls) - Nadina Marsh (St. Jago) 11.8; 100m hurdles Class 2 (girls) - Yannique Levy (ICHS) 14.5; 100m hurdles Class 3 (boys) Brian Haye (CHS) 13.6, 110m hurdles Class 2 (boys) Pete Smith (KC) 15.0; Long jump Class 4 (girls) Lisanne Scott (St. Jago) 5.05m.

NADINE PALMER - the next Merlene Ottey

Merrick Andrews, (Staff Reporter)

ASTHMA did not stop Nadine Palmer from reaching her goal. Though she fell at the finish line many times at inter-house athletics meets, her determination drove her to become one of the top junior athletes in the island and the Caribbean today. Palmer who broke the Under-17 100 metre record by clocking 11.37 at the recent Carifta Games in Grenada, suffered from asthma while attending Craighead All Age School. Currently a student at Holmwood Technical, her illness still affects her sometimes. "I always thought about running at Craighead, I did try run but I was asthmatic," said Palmer who now lives in Fine Grass, Christiana. "I used to run at Craighead's sports day in the 400 metre but I always fell. My asthma acted up on me at the end of races," she added. She was so sick that when coach of Holmwood Maurice Wilson had her undergo a fitness test to recruit her to the school, he refused to take her. "After she had undergone the test I was not going to take her because she was too sickly. I feared that if I took her something would go wrong, but because she expressed disappointment I decided to take her." Today Wilson does not regret his decision, as Palmer improved in every major race. In her first appearance for Holmwood at the 1998 Girls Championships, she was second in the Class 3 100m (12.03) and third in the 200m (25.04). Last year in her debut for Jamaica at the Carifta Games in Martinique, despite an injury caused by a minor car accident, she finished third in the Under-17 100 metres final in 12.33 seconds. Prior to her debut last year, she mined bronze in both the class 2 100 metres (11.68) and the 200m final (24.27) at the newly combined Boys' and Girls' Championships. "Her first outing for Holmwood was at the Kirkvine meet where she ran the 100 and the 200. She finished way down, I don't remember what she finished," Wilson stated. "Basically after that it was a building phase. What I tried to do was to run her on the shorter distances because she was asthmatic. I had her concentrate on the 100m and she came on well as the season progressed." Palmer, 17, who shattered two records at this year Boys' and Girls' Champs in the class 2 100m (11.50) and the 200m (23.50), says Merlene Ottey is her favourite athlete. "I always admired Merlene Ottey. I want to be on top like her," she said. Wilson in describing Palmer's attitude towards training and academics, said: "Basically she is a very trying girl. If she decides to go abroad she could enter division one or a division two because she has a good attitude and commitment towards her training and academics.

Keep up the good work Nadine!!!

Jamaica seeking better medal haul

Observer Reporter

FOLLOWING their outstanding performances at this year's Carifta Games, Jamaica's junior athletes, although stepping up a notch, should make their presence felt at the three-day Junior CAC Athletics Championships. Over 73 of the island's top Under -17 and Under-20 male and female athletes will be matching strides with athletes from over 30 countries as the Jamaicans seek to improve on their medal haul of 67 cornered two years ago in the Cayman Islands. Shannette Davidson of Holmwood Technical and Peaches Roache of Alpha will be Jamaica's first representatives on show as they compete in the Under-17 Girls' high jump final at 8:00 am. Davidson, the Carifta champion three months ago, will start favourite to take her pet event. This morning we will also see the heats and semifinals of the 100 and 400 metres in all categories, with the finals slated for later this evening. Success for Jamaica will be even easier at these games as the Cuban and Martinique teams which were expected to give the Jamaicans some good challenges will be absent. This should not, however, take away the competitiveness from the meet as some exciting challenges are in store as several Carifta Champions will be on show. Aldwyn Sappleton of Munro College who won gold two years ago will defend his title in the Boy's Under-20 500 metres this evening. It will also be sizzling action later in the evening as the finals of all the 100 metres and 400 metres will be on. Lisa Sharpe who did not compete in the 100 metres at the Carifta Games will take on Carifta 100 meters champion, Derron Stewart. In the senior girls event, the hot Veronica Campbell will be aiming for the record where teammate Nadine Palmer of Holmwood Technical will be hoping for another upset like she did at Carifta.

New strike force to lead Holmwood

COACH Barry Watson thinks Holmwood Technical have a "real chance of winning the daCosta Cup" after many years of being one of the second-tier teams. Despite being unbeaten all of last season, Holmwood failed to make it to the quarter-finals after drawing twice, including once against eventual champions STETHS at the inter-zone stage. This year, Watson says the team will learn from its mistakes and the stiff competition in Zone G will be of benefit. "The competitive nature of Zone G will help prepare us for the inter-zone and onwards," he said. A new strike force will lead Holmwood this year but returnees Miguel Coley and Landeane Morgan should lead the team with captain Dave Leung holding the back together.
